What are peptides?

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins, just fewer of them (typically 2 to 50). In the body, many peptides act as signaling molecules: they carry instructions between cells, like telling the body to release a hormone or begin a repair process. Some peptides are FDA-approved medicines; many others are studied only in research settings. What a peptide actually is

Proteins are long chains of amino acids folded into complex shapes. A peptide is the same idea at a smaller scale — a short chain, usually between 2 and 50 amino acids. That size difference matters: shorter chains are often easier for the body to recognize as specific signals.

Because peptides are how cells already talk to each other, researchers study them as a way to nudge specific biological processes — metabolism, tissue repair, growth-hormone signaling, immune response — rather than affecting the whole body at once.
