KGF Interactions: Alcohol, Caffeine, Food and Other Compounds in the Literature
Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF/FGF7, marketed as palifermin) has almost no published interaction literature. The one combination study in this page's verified set examined pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions between palifermin and heparin (PMID 25880826). No located studies tested KGF with alcohol, caffeine, fasting or meal timing. Everything else on this page is mechanistic reasoning drawn from adjacent work on redox stress, growth-factor signalling and nutrition, and is labelled as reasoning rather than interaction evidence.
Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), also called FGF7, is a fibroblast-derived protein that acts on keratinocytes and other epithelial cells. Its recombinant form, palifermin, is an intravenously administered protein used in oncology supportive care settings. Because KGF is a protein given by injection rather than an orally absorbed small molecule, the questions people commonly ask about interactions — alcohol, coffee, food, fasting windows, supplement stacks — map poorly onto the kind of studies that actually exist. This page describes what the located literature examined, and states plainly where nothing was examined at all.

The Evidence Map for KGF Interactions
The verified literature set used for this page contains exactly one study that formally tested KGF alongside another agent: researchers evaluated pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions between palifermin and heparin (PMID 25880826). Every other item in the set is either a study of KGF biology in isolation, such as the 2025 report that mesenchymal stem cell–secreted KGF ameliorated acute lung injury via the Gab1/ERK/NF-κB signalling axis (PMID 40640718), or a study of a different compound entirely that is sometimes invoked by analogy.
| Interaction question | What the located literature contains | Status |
|---|---|---|
| KGF + alcohol | No located study administered ethanol with KGF or palifermin | No interaction data |
| KGF + caffeine | No located study administered caffeine with KGF or palifermin | No interaction data |
| KGF + food, meal timing or fasting | No located study varied feeding state around KGF administration | No interaction data |
| KGF + heparin | A clinical pharmacology study examined pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions (PMID 25880826) | Studied combination |
| KGF + antioxidants / redox-active compounds | Redox stress was studied as an influence on fibroblast–keratinocyte crosstalk (PMID 34943253); no KGF co-administration | Mechanistic context only |
| KGF + topical hair-directed compounds | Topical simvastatin plus luteolin was tested in male mice (PMID 41075208); KGF was not the test article | Adjacent, not combined |
KGF and Alcohol: No Located Interaction Study
No study in the verified set administered alcohol together with KGF or palifermin, in humans or animals. Statements that alcohol "blocks" or "amplifies" KGF activity are therefore not supported by an interaction trial.
Mechanistic reasoning researchers use (labelled as reasoning, not data)
The reasoning that appears in discussion sections runs through epithelial stress biology rather than through metabolism. KGF signals through its receptor on epithelial cells and, in one experimental model, researchers reported that KGF released by mesenchymal stem cells acted through the Gab1/ERK/NF-κB axis in acute lung injury (PMID 40640718). Because NF-κB is an inflammation-responsive node, investigators reason that any systemic inflammatory or oxidative load could plausibly alter the background against which such signalling operates. A separate laboratory study reported that redox stress influenced crosstalk between fibroblasts and keratinocytes (PMID 34943253) — the same cell pair that produces and responds to KGF. That is a mechanistic bridge, not an alcohol study, and the located work did not test ethanol.
A second reasoning strand is pharmacokinetic and is weaker still: palifermin is a protein cleared by protein catabolism rather than by the cytochrome P450 pathways that dominate small-molecule alcohol interactions, so the classic hepatic-enzyme interaction argument does not transfer. No located study measured palifermin exposure with or without ethanol.

Try it freeKGF and Caffeine: No Located Interaction Study
No located study combined caffeine with KGF or palifermin. Caffeine appears frequently in hair-related discussions, but the regenerative medicine literature summarised for hair growth and regeneration described cell-based and growth-factor-based strategies rather than caffeine–growth factor combinations (PMID 36382136).
Mechanistic reasoning (labelled as reasoning, not data)
Researchers who speculate about caffeine and epithelial growth factors generally point to adenosine-receptor and phosphodiesterase activity altering intracellular cyclic AMP, which sits upstream of several kinase cascades. Since KGF signalling in one experimental model ran through ERK and NF-κB (PMID 40640718), a theoretical convergence point exists. Convergence in a pathway diagram is not an interaction finding, and no located experiment measured KGF activity with caffeine present.
Food, Fasting and Meal Timing Around KGF
No located study varied feeding state, meal composition or fasting duration around KGF administration. This gap has a structural explanation: palifermin is delivered intravenously, so the gastrointestinal absorption questions that make food–drug interaction studies necessary for oral agents do not apply in the same way.
Why protein stability comes up in food questions
A recurring question is whether KGF could be consumed in food or preserved through processing. Food-science work is instructive about protein fragility in general: a review of food processing by high hydrostatic pressure described pressure-based processing as a technology applied to foods (PMID 28300504), and a separate study reported that pretreatments changed the component sugars and immunostimulating activity of polysaccharides isolated from Dendrobium officinale (PMID 34775614). Both illustrate that processing conditions can alter the structure and bioactivity of biological macromolecules; neither examined KGF, and neither should be read as a KGF finding.
Nutritional status as a confounder rather than an interaction
Some questions framed as "food interactions" are really questions about nutritional status in clinical populations. Nutrition trials in the verified set addressed different endpoints entirely: a triple-blind randomised controlled trial examined omega-3 supplementation in sarcopenia after bariatric surgery (PMID 42289186), and a longitudinal study reported that hospitalization was associated with handgrip strength decline in older adults (PMID 34460081). Researchers cite work of this kind to argue that clinical and nutritional context shifts outcomes in hospitalised populations, which is the setting where palifermin is used. Neither study involved KGF, and neither tested a diet–KGF combination.

The single formal combination study located for this page is a clinical pharmacology investigation in which researchers examined pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions between palifermin and heparin (PMID 25880826). The pairing is not arbitrary: KGF is a heparin-binding member of the fibroblast growth factor family, and heparin binding is a structural feature of this protein family, which is why investigators designed a dedicated interaction study rather than relying on theory. The study, published in 2015, is the appropriate reference for anyone asking whether a KGF interaction has ever been formally characterised — the answer is that this one was.
Readers looking for the specific parameter estimates reported by the researchers should consult the primary record, since this page does not reproduce numerical values that the verified abstract scope does not supply.
Combinations Discussed in Hair and Epithelial Research
KGF appears in reviews of regenerative approaches to hair, and those discussions are frequently misread as combination evidence. A narrative review of regenerative medicine strategies for hair growth and regeneration surveyed the approaches described in the literature (PMID 36382136), but surveying strategies is not the same as testing them together. Separately, researchers reported on topically applied simvastatin plus luteolin and its effect on hair development in male mice (PMID 41075208); that experiment used a two-compound topical combination in which KGF was not an ingredient.
In the antioxidant space, one study reported that allicin alleviated acrylamide-induced oxidative stress in BRL-3A cells (PMID 31185235). It is cited in redox discussions because oxidative stress modifies epithelial and fibroblast behaviour, as reported in the work on redox stress and fibroblast–keratinocyte crosstalk (PMID 34943253). Neither study administered KGF, so neither supports an antioxidant–KGF interaction claim in either direction.

Start learning freeDelivery-Route Combinations: Gene Therapy and Cell Therapy Contexts
A different class of "combination" question concerns how KGF is delivered rather than what is taken alongside it. A review of promising gene therapeutics for salivary gland radiotoxicity described gene-transfer approaches in irradiated glandular tissue (PMID 28286865), and a 2025 experimental study reported that mesenchymal stem cell–secreted KGF ameliorated acute lung injury via the Gab1/ERK/NF-κB signalling axis (PMID 40640718). In the second case the "combination" is intrinsic: the cells were the delivery vehicle and KGF was one of the secreted mediators the researchers identified. These are delivery-platform studies, not co-administration interaction studies.
Interaction-Related Adverse Events: What Studies Report
Adverse-event reporting specific to KGF combinations is confined, within this verified set, to the palifermin–heparin pharmacology study, in which researchers characterised pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interaction endpoints (PMID 25880826). No located study reported adverse events arising from KGF combined with alcohol, caffeine, dietary supplements or food, because no located study administered those combinations. The absence of reported events in an unexamined combination is an absence of data, not a finding of tolerability, and the distinction matters when interpreting claims found outside the peer-reviewed record.
Reports from adjacent work describe the biology rather than combination safety: the acute lung injury model characterised a signalling axis engaged by KGF (PMID 40640718), and the redox study characterised how oxidative conditions shifted fibroblast–keratinocyte crosstalk (PMID 34943253).

Try it freeHow to Read Interaction Claims About KGF
- Check whether both agents were actually administered. Only the palifermin–heparin study in this set did so (PMID 25880826).
- Separate pathway overlap from tested interaction. Shared nodes such as ERK or NF-κB, reported in the KGF lung injury work (PMID 40640718), generate hypotheses only.
- Note the model. Cell-culture findings such as the allicin oxidative-stress experiment in BRL-3A cells (PMID 31185235) and mouse topical experiments (PMID 41075208) do not carry human interaction implications.
- Distinguish reviews from trials. A narrative review of hair regeneration strategies summarised a field (PMID 36382136); it did not generate combination data.
The overall picture is that KGF interaction research is thin and specific. One combination was formally studied (PMID 25880826); the lifestyle combinations most often asked about were not studied at all, and the mechanistic arguments used to fill that gap rest on work such as the redox-stress crosstalk study (PMID 34943253) that never involved KGF administration.

Frequently asked questions
Has any study tested KGF together with alcohol?▾
No located study administered alcohol with KGF or palifermin. The mechanistic argument researchers sometimes raise draws on findings that redox stress influenced fibroblast–keratinocyte crosstalk (PMID 34943253) and that KGF signalling engaged the Gab1/ERK/NF-κB axis in an acute lung injury model (PMID 40640718). Both are biology studies without ethanol, so they describe reasoning rather than an interaction result.
Is there evidence on caffeine and KGF?▾
No. No located study combined caffeine with KGF or palifermin. A narrative review of regenerative medicine strategies for hair growth and regeneration described cell- and growth-factor-based approaches rather than caffeine combinations (PMID 36382136). Speculative arguments about cyclic AMP converging on kinase pathways such as ERK, reported in the KGF lung injury study (PMID 40640718), remain hypotheses only.
Which KGF combination has actually been studied?▾
Heparin. Researchers examined pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions between palifermin and heparin in a clinical pharmacology study published in 2015 (PMID 25880826). KGF belongs to the heparin-binding fibroblast growth factor family, which is why a dedicated investigation was conducted rather than relying on theoretical reasoning. It is the only formal combination study identified for this page.
Does food or fasting change how KGF behaves?▾
No located study varied feeding state, meal composition or fasting duration around KGF administration. Food-science work shows processing can alter macromolecules — for example, pretreatments changed the component sugars and immunostimulating activity of Dendrobium officinale polysaccharides (PMID 34775614), and a review described high hydrostatic pressure food processing (PMID 28300504) — but neither involved KGF.
Do nutrition studies say anything about KGF outcomes?▾
Not directly. A triple-blind randomised controlled trial examined omega-3 supplementation in sarcopenia after bariatric surgery (PMID 42289186), and a longitudinal study reported that hospitalization was associated with handgrip strength decline in older adults (PMID 34460081). Researchers cite such work to describe clinical context in hospitalised populations, not to describe any interaction with KGF, which neither study administered.
Are antioxidant supplements known to interact with KGF?▾
No interaction study was located. One study reported that allicin alleviated acrylamide-induced oxidative stress in BRL-3A cells (PMID 31185235), and another reported that redox stress influenced crosstalk between fibroblasts and keratinocytes (PMID 34943253). Neither administered KGF, so together they describe redox biology relevant to the cell types involved rather than an antioxidant–KGF combination finding.
What about combining KGF with other hair-directed compounds?▾
No located experiment combined KGF with topical hair agents. Researchers reported on topically applied simvastatin plus luteolin and hair development in male mice, an experiment in which KGF was not an ingredient (PMID 41075208). A separate narrative review surveyed regenerative strategies for hair growth and regeneration without testing them in combination (PMID 36382136).
